While dry scalp is often a symptom that surfaces during the colder months, it can most definitely be a year round issue. That’s because at the heart of any symptom, there is a deeper root problem. As we begin to innerstand our bodies and the intricacies of our esoteric technology, something I discuss heavily inside the Sacred Anarchy Mystery School, what becomes apparently clear is we are all smilar, yet very different.
One individual with dry scalp may have nutrient deficiencies, while another may have a genetic factor. When we treat ourselves poorly, it disrupts the natural function of our organs, glands, tissues, cells, and so forth.Whatever the root cause, we must remember that the body is a holarchical system — it works together to create your experience with life.
The personal care product industry is a multi-billion dollar market and that’s because, most conditions are not cleared up topically or with a medicines that only treat the symptoms. Consumers are programmed to keep purchasing products that barely get the job done, because they aren’t focused on the root problem. When we aren’t focused on the root solution, we default towards quick fixes.
These quick fixes keep the personal care product industry thriving.
Dry scalp is an annoying symptom and one most people don’t talk about it, yet it is the culprit of much strife. It affects us emotionally as well as physically, and can put our mental health at risk.
So let’s dive into the causes of dry scalp and get to the root of the problem.
=> For every effect there is a cause and for every cause there must be an effect. Our job is to figure out what is CAUSING the symptom so we can change the EFFECT. But without this information, we will continue to purchase quick-fixes that only treat the EFFECT, never getting to the CAUSE.
What is Dry Scalp?
Scientifically, dry scalp is often associated with a condition called xerosis, which refers to the abnormal dryness of the skin. The scalp, being an extension of the skin, can experience dryness due to various factors.
Lack of Sebum Production:
The scalp, like the rest of the skin, has sebaceous glands that produce sebum, an oily substance that helps moisturize the skin and hair. In individuals with a lower production of sebum, the scalp may become dry.
Impaired Skin Barrier Function:
The skin has a natural barrier that helps retain moisture and protect against external factors. Disruption of this barrier, due to factors such as harsh weather, excessive washing, or certain skin conditions, can lead to dryness.
Dehydration:
Inadequate hydration, both internal (drinking GOOD water) and external (moisturizing the skin), can contribute to dry scalp. Water is essential for maintaining skin moisture and exfoliation is essential for helping the skin to breath and detox (more on this in a moment).
Skin Conditions:
Conditions such as seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, or psoriasis can affect the scalp and result in dryness, redness, and flakiness. These are also symptoms of an internal imbalance.
Microbial Factors:
Certain microorganisms, including fungi like Malassezia, can influence scalp health (we will discuss a protective remedy for this in a moment). An imbalance in the scalp microbiome may contribute to conditions such as dandruff and dry scalp.
Environmental Factors:
Exposure to dry and cold weather, low humidity, and environmental pollutants can impact the moisture levels of the scalp and create hormonal imbalances.
Genetic Factors:
Individual variations in skin physiology, including genetics, can influence susceptibility to dry scalp.
This is where we begin identifying which of these factors applies to someone with dry scalp, but I want to focus this article on something very specific because at the root, it applies to all the factors listed above.
Hormones
I want to focus on hormones as a key factor in dry scalp and one that is often overlooked, especially while strolling the isles at your local drugstore looking for another quick fix for your dry scalp issues.
Hormones are chemical messengers produced by glands in the endocrine system and released into the bloodstream. They play a crucial role in regulating various physiological processes and maintaining homeostasis within the body.
Hormones play a significant role in regulating sebum production.
Changes in hormonal levels, such as those occurring during puberty, menopause, or hormonal disorders, can impact sebum secretion. Even if you are not going through puberty or menopause, your hormones are likely out of whack.
Why?
Because we live in a world where endocrine (hormone) disruptors are on every corner, in every product, and are found in toxins in the air we breathe and the food we eat!
Hormone disruptors, also known as endocrine disruptors, are chemicals that can interfere with the endocrine system in humans and animals. The endocrine system is a complex network of glands and hormones that regulate various physiological processes, including growth, development, metabolism, and reproductive functions.
=> Hormone disruptors can mimic, block, or interfere with the body's natural hormones, leading to adverse effects.
One of these common “adverse effects” is dry scalp.
Many of the “medicines” used to treat dry scalp contain endocrine disruptors! Hence, why the symptoms also never truly heal.
Essentially, having a dry scalp is the endocrine system’s way of sending you an alert that something is off; your hormones are being affected.
SIDE NOTE: Inside the Inner Temple Magick Academy you learn all about Alchemy, which is closely linked to the endocrine system — which creates and regulates your hormones. If you are interested in learning the ancient art of alchemy consider becoming a private member of the Sacred Anarchy Mystery School.
How to Heal Dry Scalp
As we’ve discussed, dry scalp is a warning sign that something is going on with the endocrine system that requires your attention.
While topical products can be great for temporary relief, the goal is to get to the root of the internal problem so the symptoms disappear naturally.
So let’s take a look at some herbal and plant medicine remedies that will help to ease the symptoms of dry scalp, as well as nature’s internal remedies to heal the root of the problem, sound good?
Herbal Remedies & Plant Medicine:
Because I struggled my entire adult life with scalp issues (I won’t bore you with the yucky details), I spent the last decade crafting natural remedies instead of purchasing store-bought medications.
These are my top 3 topical remedies that work heavenly!
The Temple of The Gods Scalp Oil:
Beat the itch, banish the flakes, and regrow luscious locks with this potent elixir made with medicinal herbs used in Traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic Medicine. Use this 2-3 times per week for a deep cleansing detox until conditions improve. Then use 1-2 times per month.
Lotus Flower Scalp Tonic:
Grow back hair you’ve lost due to dry scalp issues with this apple cider vinegar tonic created to rebalance the pH of your scalp and kill off unwanted fungus (Malassezia globosa) or bacteria. After you wash and condition your hair, apply Lotus Flower tonic to your scalp with a cotton ball or pad. Do not rinse.
The Nightside of Eden Detox Scrub:
A newly added addition to my shop, this coffee scrub is perfect for exfoliating the scalp. Simply put desired amount of natural conditioner tin the palm of your hand and mix in 1-2 teaspoons of the coffee scrub. Apply to scalp and massage trouble areas. Rinse normally.
While I do not carry Shampoos and Conditions (yet) in my shop, I recommend the following Etsy shops:
